Control 2 is being made with a smaller budget than Alan Wake 2, but according to Remedy it’s for a good reason

At a time when video game budgets continue to bloat, with new games getting increasingly expensive to create, Control 2 will reportedly by made with less budget than Remedy Entertainment’s previous game: Alan Wake 2.

Speaking to Stephen Totilo for Game File, Remedy CEO Tero Virtala says that he believes that 50 million euros is enough to make a great Remedy game, stating “I think with that we can create excellent games” at that budget, and that if that game were to sell two million copies that “we are at break-even per game”.

Virtala also adds: “That then builds the basis that, if we create an excellent game and it happens to sell four million or five million units, then we are really happy.” It’s worth noting that exact budgets for Control 2 were not stated outright, rather hinted towards with the above quotes. Still, if Control 2 is made with roughly 50 million, a decent performance that alligned with other AAA releases that we’ve seen recently like Clair Obscur Expidition 33, would certainly be good news for the studio.

It’s worth noting that Control 2 is not the next game coming from Remedy, instead FBC Firebreak takes that spot. A co-operative first person shooter set in the world of Control, it’s a drastic departure in terms of genre and style for Remedy, one that aims at taking on a type of game Remedy isn’t particularly experienced in.
