Square Enix cans Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link for good, all while fans beg for any crumb of Kingdom Hearts 4 news
Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link has been cancelled by Square Enix, as the company continues with its development on Kingdom Hearts 4. The company said in a statement that “it would be difficult for us to offer a service that players would find satisfactory over a long period of time”.
The full statement, which you can read in the official social media post embedded further on in this piece, was a sudden and unfortunate announcement about a game that was greatly anticipated by Kingdom Hearts fans. The game would have been a mobile entry in the beloved series that was first announced back in 2022 and teased occasionally in the years afterwards. Since then, it had been delayed from a planned 2024 release date, then drowned in radio silence until the bad news today.
Missing-Link had held limited beta tests over the past few years, but any inkling of word about a full release was been incredibly scarce. It seems that, following these tests and internal deliberation, Square Enix believes the game won’t meet its bar for quality.
This is a shame! Kingdom Hearts fans have been lacking a new game for quite a while now, and with Kingdom Hearts 4 still deep in development, it looks as though they’ll have to wait a while longer before experiencing a new entry in the series.
In response to the news, composer Yoko Shimomura has posted on Twitter that she hopes that the music created for Missing-Link will eventually be heard by fans even if the game doesn’t release. This, on top of all the new story beats that’ll seemingly be lost to the void, is sure to cause some heartbreak among Kingdom Hearts fans.
